Introduction

As founder of the innovation initiative at Raytheon, Mike Vahey has been at the forefront of innovation throughout his entire career in technology.

Bio

Throughout his career, Mr. Vahey has been at the forefront of technology. With degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, he joined Hughes Aircraft Company and later Raytheon where he pioneered new computing paradigms leading to deployments in spacecraft, airplanes, ground vehicles and submarines. His 38 years of internal and DARPA funded research honed his innovation skills, ensuring that research and development teams achieved exceptional results – frequently exceeding customer expectations of what could be. Often this included multiple companies and universities. Most recently, Mr. Vahey was a Sr. Principal Engineering Fellow at Raytheon and one of the five corporate technology champions, where his role was to oversee all processing, software, and cyber technologies for the company.

Building upon these technical roles, Mr. Vahey was asked to create an innovation initiative for the Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems business unit – to invigorate the 10,000 person organization and to find new business growth as the Innovation Champion. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, Mr. Vahey assessed the employee environment, investigated alternative approaches, and established a novel innovation approach coupling models for business opportunity evaluation and people engagement. This became the Office of Innovation, which involved employees across Raytheon and created an idea portfolio with a potential value exceeding $5B.

These innovation methods were quickly emulated throughout Raytheon. Mr. Vahey has spoken throughout the company and externally on the motivation for an innovation initiative and methods to gather ideas, boost creativity, refine ideas, align with business needs, invigorate people, form effective innovation groups, and create innovation challenges to spur idea flow.

Beyond innovation and advanced computing methods, Mr. Vahey’s interests include: camping, hiking, bicycling, sailing, and amateur radio. He is a BSA leader, licensed instrument pilot, and Extra Class radio operator. He enjoys using his technical, innovation, and leadership skills to help groups excel and go beyond where they think they can.
